NFL - At the end of the day, Darnold has NFL size, arm strength, accuracy, pocket mobility, poise and field reading capability. His windup is an eyesore for sure, but he has the velocity to mitigate the additional release time. While Darnold has the mental toughness and talent to start tomorrow, early sideline seasoning could help him better process coverages in an attempt to eliminate future interceptions. Darnold has the tools to thrive in any system and doesn't have to have perfect protection to succeed. His floor is solid starter, but he has the ceiling to be one of the top tier quarterbacks in the game as he gains more experience.
DLF - Combine review. Unlike Jackson and the other top quarterback prospects, USC’s Sam Darnold chose not to throw at the Combine. With so many quarterbacks available and so many NFL teams having a need at the position, most evaluators were looking forward to seeing all of the prospects in one location. Darnold should throw at the USC Pro Day taking place on March 21st and is still in the running to be the top overall pick to the Cleveland Browns.
CBS - More often than not, he plays well beyond his years mentally when reading coverages and when making anticipation throws at all levels of the field. Arm strength is fine. Good scrambling ability. and even better throw-on-the-run-skills. Footwork is sporadic. Accuracy is mainly spot-on. Effective eluding pressure but gets antsy when blocking is leaky. Owns awkward, elongated release.
DLF - PROJECTED ROOKIE DRAFT RANGE Darnold is coming off the board as QB4, which I feel is right where he should go. Pick 26 feels a little bit high, but if you need a quarterback and three have already been taken it’s certainly appropriate. In a vacuum, I’d rather have players like Antonio Callaway, DaeSean Hamilton, J’Mon Moore, and Mark Andrews than him, as these players have both short and long-term upside at positions that I think are more valuable than quarterback.
